Interview: Ramon Jackson

Congrats on your recent music release!

How did your musical journey begin? What initially sparked your interest in music?

Thank You. I’ve always wanted to pursue music since I was a child. i Ran from it my whole life though thinking it was impossible because I didn’t know how or where to start. Thankfully about 11 years ago my mom told me she saw me doing it. The next day she was gone so I decided I would pursue it since it would make her proud.

Can you describe some of the pivotal moments or turning points in your artistic development?

One of the biggest pivotal points besides that last conversation I had with my mom was me moving to NYC and meeting Valerie Simpson at her music venue Ashford and Simpson’s Sugar Bar. It’s been where I learned many of the important aspects of being a good entertainer and a good businessman.

How have your musical tastes and influences evolved over time?

I’ve always loved Gospel, Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz and Blues. That hasn’t changed. I feel like my appreciation for Rock has definitely grown over the last decade though. I have a couple Rock inspired songs on my upcoming album “Champion”

Are there any specific experiences or challenges that have shaped your artistic identity?

I think being in an industry that’s so heavily dependent on cover artists has definitely shaped my identity as an original artist. Like, I love covers but the feeling of audiences enjoying my original music is a whole different and more elevated experience. It’s like my experiences are touching other people’s lives.

What role does experimentation play in your creative process?

I’m a multi-genre artist so I definitely enjoy experimenting with different sounds and vibes. It kerosene me vibrant creatively.

Can you share a particularly meaningful or memorable performance or recording session from your journey?

I’m in the studio right now with legendary producer Rashad Coes. I grew up listening to music he produced with ICE Cube and tye Lynch Mob so this is definitely an honor I don’t take lightly. We were friends before I realized who he was cause he’s a real cool and humble dude. When we started working together I had to give him his flowers and continue to do so. I also feel like his creative ear has elevated my writing styles.

Are there any recurring themes or concepts that you find yourself exploring in your music?

I definitely have at least one inspirational song on each project. This album “Champion” is no different. The title track is definitely a song that inspires people.

How do you stay inspired and motivated to create new music?

The world we live in is chaotic and that inspires me to keep creating music that can help people decompress but also challenge the chaos.

Looking back on your journey so far, what are some lessons or insights you’ve gained about yourself as an artist?

My journey has taught me that I am capable and resourceful. I can do whatever I choose. And I choose to be a Champion💪💪💪
